also be very interested and maybe another. i think that either brad paul or i or don faulk would know if they were discussing this with senior housing developers. they met with tndc project managers, doing a preliminary analysis that went to the mayor's office of housing. they said they were very interested in it. now can this site be available? you had turned down the conditional use. so we decided with don that the logical thing would be to get in touch with the methodist church and find out. the result was that this lawyer told the methodist that they shouldn't get involved with it and each and every methodist i talk to, they are all interested in senior housing, but the lawyer said no. so what was the result? tndc was subpoenaeded and threatened with litigation and they had a lot of expense. i think you have heard about that. so they want to come forward and do the full analysis, which might be thousands of hours and the offer that they were told would be welcomed after the judge ordered them to talk. all right? now the methodist administrator said we would love to do that and the

. host: don williamson may have follow up. any questions about -- any answer to his question about the estate tax, giving gifts to his kids? guest: there is a whole other regime of taxation in this country called the estate tax, and there are gift taxes that go with it. those rules -- there was a time where, in 2010, there was no estate tax in this country, and it was a wonderful opportunity that died, came back in 2011. it was going to come back in 2012 were only people making more than $1 million would be subject to the estate tax. that law has been changed to permit $5 million to be -- even if your viewers feel they do not have anything approaching $5 million, were one spouse to pass away, it behooves the surviving spouse to file a state tax return for the deceased spouse, even though the threshold has not been met. that is to use the unused exclusion on the state tax to be available to the second spouse when he or she passes away. that is a little-known provision in the law that many middle income americans or people who do not consider themselves wealthy will need to consider, tha

. basically right in term office the deficit, and don and i have been frustrated by the coverage we have seen of this issue, because in talking about the deficit, those who want to restrain it or cut it, the entire emphasis for the most part has been on entitlements. entitlement spending is out of control. and what is overlooked in this is that social security and medicare, of course, are -- taxes are collected to support those programs. so, it's not as the all of that is coming out of the general fund. in the case of social security, a surplus in social security continues to mask just exactly how bad some parts of the deficit are. you're absolutely right from really the late '70s on, the growth of the deficit has been phenomenal. during the clinton years some of that went down, but as we make the point of the book, both parties, unfortunately, on most of these issues, have had a very significant role, especially when it comes to free trade and deregulation. taxes, it's a little different, in our mind. the democrats have been a little more savvy in terms of what needs to be done in terms of t
